Vita sales slump continues in Japan

PlayStation Vita sales continue to decline in Japan following a solid launch week. The handheld shifted 325,000 units in its debut week, but followed that up with a disappointing 72,479 units in week 2.

Things have continued to drop for Sony in the handheld's third week, moving just 42,648 units and placing fourth on the weekly hardware sales charts.

1. Mario Kart 7 (3DS, Nintendo) - 109,000 (1,160,000)

3. Warriors Orochi 2 (PS3, Koei Tecmo) - 73.000 (274,000)

4. Super Mario 3D Land (3DS, Nintendo) - 68,000 (1,080,000)

5. Final Fantasy XIII-2 (PS3, Square Enix) - 61,000 (704,000)

6. Inazuma Eleven Go: Shine / Dark (3DS, Level 5) - 48,000 (269,000)

7. Just Dance Wii (Wii, Nintendo) - 33,000 (453,000)

8. Kirby's Return to Dream Land (Wii, Nintendo) - 24,000 (537,000)

for its price point, I still think the vita sales aren't too bad.

the 3ds wasn't doing crash hot either before it dropped massively.

Not that bad though. Not anywhere near as bad.

I guess Sony is hoping for longevity like the PSP?

I think this will turn around a bit in time to come but these are extremely poor figures for Sony.

global money issues aren't helping much. also the casual gamers who in the past would have purchased a handheld console are more likely to stick to their smartphone and purchase $2 games rather than $50 games

Are you serious? If MH3G was out here I'd buy it instantly! They simply can't see enough good games on the horizon to get a Vita. Makes perfect sense. With the 3DS there was Layton, which still hasn't come out in the west... what does the Vita have? Hot Shots Golf? And what upcoming games that appeal to the Japanese? FFVII. That's it (although that's underplaying it; if anything can get the Vita to beat the 3DS, it's a combination of FF and MH). [monkey]
