PlayStation Vita Australian launch date, price revealed

Japanese gamers have known for a while that they would be getting Sony's highly anticipated upcoming handheld, Vita, before Christmas.

Gamers in Western regions have had to wait a little longer, with Sony only today confirming global release dates for the handheld.

PlayStation Vita will launch in Australia, Europe, North America and Latin America on February 23, 2012, meaning we won't have to wait too long after the November Japanese launch to get our hands on the powerful new handheld.

The wi-fi model will set gamers back AUD $349.95 (RRP) and New Zealanders from NZD $449.95 (RRP), while the the 3G/Wi-Fi model will retail for AUD $449.95 (RRP) and NZD $549.95, respectively.

“PlayStation Vita is a revolutionary device, which will offer the best possible portable gaming experiences available on the market. Its impressive feature set is designed to provide the ultimate gaming experiences on the go. This, combined with social connectivity means there will be not only innovative new ways to play, but also new ways to connect with others,” said Michael Ephraim, Managing Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia and New Zealand.

Kind of pointless to buy 3G with smartphones these days. No justification in adding another bill when you can just tether from our phone and pay just as much.

Even so, compared to the US pricing this shouldn't have happened. That is the basis, and we keep getting screwed.

That said, the 3DS was RRP $350 at launch and I paid $280 including a game. I'd do that for the wi-fi Vita.

I'm quite happy with the wi-fi price now that I think about it, + $100 for 3G just seems too much though. I'll be sticking with wi-fi.

Of course. The smaller things get, the more they cost for the same kind of grunt.
I agree with most others here in that the 3G is overpriced, but perhaps that's just Sony's sly way of making the $350 price tag on the wifi-only version seem a bit more affordable!

EBGames does have a trade in deal.. I didn't ask about other models but a 3000 will put $45 toward a Vita..
Not sure what I think about this...

Most Android-powered smartphones can be turned into mini Wi-Fi hot-spots anyway, negating the need for a 3G model...

The PSP was $399 when I got it, so this price surprised me. IT's good that it's cheaper, but still a fair bit of money.

I'm still unsure about the Vita. I need to see it in action AND with some titles I like.

I dont think Youtube captures it well enough. In person on the OLED screen is where you see how it truly performs. For that kinda money, I rather test it and stuff myself first.

Wow. That sentence alone was for me, the biggest draw card to this device. I didn't even think of that. iPhone in pocket and bam, 3G anywhere, anytime. Why pay $100 extra for a service you're not 100% sure on, if we already have more suitable devices? I don't think the Vita will offer anything over the iPhone in that respect.

It is a personal thing really isn't it.

To me, the idea of playing games while on a bus, on a train or on the go is just so not appealing....part of it has to do with my personal commitment to being present in the moment when i am out in the world.....to noticing and taking in the experience of being in the world as well as opportunities to relate to others.

This, tied in with my preference for gaming at home on a massive screen means i guess i have always never understood the appeal of mobile gaming. Hence i think this sort of price for it is over the top.

Still, different things for different people.
