PS Vita Japan sales drop below 20,000

Sales for the week of January 9 to 15, 2012, have revealed yet another period of damning sales figures for Sony's new handheld.

While the Nintendo 3DS, PS3 and PSP all enjoy strong weeks, the PS Vita fell to below 20,000 sales for the week following numerous weeks of being beaten out by its seven year-old predecessor.

Here is the list of figures:

1. 3DS: 100, 668
2. PS3: 30, 332
3. PSP: 22, 538
4. PSV: 18, 361
5. Wii: 14, 179
6. X360: 1,519
7. DSi LL: 1,515
8. DSi: 1,206
9. PS2: 766

Xbox has never been big in Japan. I must say the Vita figures are surprising. Also quite worrying. I wonder how long Sony will wait till their forced to cut price or offer some other incentive?(throw in free memory card and game maybe).

DSi LL is the DSi XL but in japan they used a slightly different name

I realise Japan is big on all things electronic - but it's just one country.. Once the Vita released to the rest of the world I feel there will be a shuffle in those figures..

There's been millions of wii's sold in Japan so most people interested would already own one. Out of those figures though, I'd imagine the majority would be for SS :P.

Japan is Sony's biggest market. To get those numbers in your largest market isn't a positive sign for other markets

I guess the plus side though is that they have three platforms in the top 3. People are going out to buy PlayStation products. You can ignore that.

But yeah, sales are pretty bad...No matter how much of a spin they put on it.

There's no system sellers for a Japanese market, it needs a Monster Hunter or Final Fantasy or something.
It will do better in the west thanks to Uncharted being bigger here, but I still don't expect anything amazing.

Personally I see a massive launch for the Vita in the West (similar to the 3DS) followed by a "dry period", that I think will last for around 1-2 months. Sony saw Nintendo's 6-month "dry" period that had only DoAD, OoT, and SF643D; they'll make sure to avoid it. However, 3rd parties aren't going to fill the void (Nintendo made that assumption and it failed). Sony needs to take the initiative. I think they already know that, so I'm not afraid for them in the West; it's Japan I'm afraid for. With no MH in sight, and only a FF remake, the country that bought 1/3 of all PSP's sold just isn't buying the Vita. [WTF]

100% agree.

For me i am only interested in uncharted(not 100% sure) not worth $350 just for a crappy version of part 3???

Also i 100% want everybody's golf.

Apart from that i am thinking of giving it a miss and hope they have a small struggle at the start so i can get a free game and memory card.

When persona 4 remake comes out i'll buy one then :D their will be tons of games to choose from around then

PSP has a bigger a game catalogue and is a helluva lot cheaper so I can understand people jumping at getting one. I don't really see a problem with sales dropping. as long as games dont stop being made for it.

I'd be worried if sales slumped during a major release of a game on the platform

no offence but psp is over done finished the vita will have a good game catalogue
I just thing people are no longer falling for the whole pre-order or launch thing no more all i can say is it has a better launch line up then the 3 ds did japs a probably waithing for monster hunter or mgs or whatever
