Greetings, internet connoisseurs!

As you may well be aware, things change on the internet. It's an evolving platform that is always looking to improve itself and we at MMGN feel the same way.

Today I'm here to tell you that we're getting with the times and updating our review scoring system with a 20 point scale.

What's Changed?

I'm glad you asked!

From the beginning of 2012, we have moved to a 20 point scale when we award a game a score out of 10 at the end of a review.

It replaces the old 100 point scale, which we used until the end of 2011.

This means that games will receive a score between 0 - 10 increasing in increments of .5 instead of .1.

There will be no more scores like 8.7/10. It will now be either 8.5 or 9.0.

We've also made some slight changes to what each score means. Click here for more information!

Anything Else?

We've also changed the content in our scoring box. Our reviews still conclude with The Final Verdict, summarising the review, but now only include an overall score.

We have removed the individual scores for graphics, gameplay, sound and value as this information is included in the review and does not need to be summarised with a number outside of the overall score.

Is Every Score Being Changed?

No. The new system only applies to games reviewed from 2012 onwards. Previous review scores remain unchanged.

Likewise, old indie reviews will retain their score out of 5 stars. Movie reviews will continue to use the 5 star system.

I actually liked how games were rated 8.7 or 9.3 etc, it's more precise

Why did you remove the boxes at the bottom that represent the scores for graphics, sound, gameplay, etc? I usually don't read the whole review so I just cut to the bottom and see short box of information there. I don't have time for reading! :P

Only if you want a review to be done by a robot. I'd still prefer a final score out of five over anything else, but I doubt you're going to change it again.

Only if you want a review to be done by a robot.

Because it's a well known fact that only robots can understand the decimal system.

We got a lot of criticism for them because the final score wasn't an average. It never was, but a lot of people didn't understand that. Like sound wasn't as important as gameplay for example. So we decided to get rid of it. After all, it's just a number :)

This also suits indie games a lot more - while the game itself might be an overall 9.5, if it has shoddy graphics (which a lot of indie games do) we can't give them a high enough score to make up the average.

It just levels out the playing field - we'll tell you if the graphics are stunning or if they are average in the review. A final, single score, represents the experience as a whole, which is what you should be wanting to know about anyways.

Yeah, there were people complaining why an average wasn't made, even when there was such a large difference between gameplay and sound (for example). I never understand how people DIDN'T understand that... No one reviews out of an average. It doesn't make sense to make an average of a score if it's like this:

Gameplay 9
Graphics 6
Sound 7
Value 8

I don't think the average game appreciates a game being downgraded because it has screen tearing or clipping issues. The most important thing is gameplay and the experience, and if the graphics don't compromise those things, then it really shouldn't be factored in the final score.

It's not easy to critique games, so we're trying to simplify it and simply tell the reader whether the game is entertaining, accessible and meets their wants in a game. A 100-point system is overkill imo.
