Italy has won the World Cup for a fourth time, beating France 5-3 on penalties in the World Cup final in Berlin.
The match finished 1-1 at full-time and after 30 minutes of extra-time.
David Trezeguet missed his spot-kick for France but Fabio Grosso made no mistake in burying the winning kick for Italy.
France dominated much of the match but in what proved to be an omen, captain Zinedine Zidane ended his professional career in disgrace, sent off for head-butting Marco Materazzi in the chest in the 110th minute.
The game had opened with controversy, Zidane scoring a debatable penalty on 7 minutes.
Italy soon pegged France back when Marco Materazzi rose to head home from a 19th minute corner.
Italy had a goal disallowed on the hour, when Luca Toni headed the ball into the net but was ruled offside in another contentious decision.
Franck Ribery and Zidane both came agonisingly close to winning the cup for France in extra-time but it was not to be.
