Will consoles go the way of the high-end PC?

I won't share this on PC for the time being -- I'll look at what the feedback is and then include the PC guys in if they want.

I have been thinking about Apple and commentary coming from the industry regarding their presence in the video game industry.

I know that a lot of you don't think Apple has a chance, but I digress: I think the iPad and App Store have far too much presence to not be relevant, and Apple won't change its agenda anytime soon. They will continue to push into the market. This is essentially assured.

But if Apple creates a product that becomes the staple -- just as the iPhone has for smartphones and iPad for tablets -- then will the console market move into the high-end territory, marketed towards an exclusively "hardcore" market?

I think Nintendo is anticipating this shift, and they are slowly making the transition, going from super casual, to semi-casual, semi-hardcore with Wii U. I think Nintendo is very smart.

If this IS the case, I think it will be a really good thing for gamers, because we know Nintendo probably won't try to compete directly with Apple, but would instead create hardware that is appealing to a niche, hardcore market, as they did with their consoles pre-Wii.

I am asking if the console market will become more like the PC market, whereas platforms like the iPad, iPhone become more prevalent, relevant.

If consoles enter the realm of obscurity like the PC (although we are seeing a bit of a resurgence thank god) gaming will be in a sad state of disrepair, and that thought scares me.

I'm hoping that Apple don't go into the console market. Not because of generic Apple-is-overpriced-and-is-for-idiots–ism, but because Apple have the potential to monopolise the market, which is everything but a good outcome.

Agree with Heller on this one.

I love that we have Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony releasing consoles and competing with one another. I dont want anyone to own the market. I doubt it will occur.

Even though Apply have the iphone, the HTC came along and is gaining momentum.

I always want their to be competition in our market.

Well, it's not just HTC. It's Android and there is competition within the Android market. There isn't for Apple.

It would be very dismal is Apple were to overtake the gaming industry, which I don't think will happen.

I think they've learnt a lot since that console, they've grown and changed who they are. If they made a console now, I'm sure it'll be a success. They've made devices that weren't intended for gaming and they're perfect. Imagine if their current mindset made a console. It'd be great.

Personally I think that if Apple even tried to move into the console sector now, it would cause M$ and Sony to temporarily work together to put Apple down.
No matter if you think that it wont happen, Sony and M$ would no doubt go for the "side with the devil you know" idea then allow Apple to get a major foothold into the console sector of gaming.

Like I said Apple wont even try to move into the console sector.
And it would only be worth anything to the obsessive collectors, even if Apple did somehow manage to out muscle Sony and M$.

A good example is the NES, they arnt worth shit unless you palm them off to the right person

They already have it down pat. Hook an iPad 2 up to your TV via HDMI and use your iPhone as a controller. Not many games support it now, but just you wait....just you wait [Rage]
