Why do we play games?

Featured 38 Comments 33 Votes 1731 Views 16/02/2012 Back to Articles

Have you ever actually thought about why it is that you play games? Why you like games of a particular type? Do they reflect on your personality, your interests, your aspirations, your morals and ethics, or your intelligence? Is it an escape for you, a time killer, or something you do because it’s become a part of your daily routine?

We have studies to link video games and violence, video games and age groups, video games and economic circumstances, and yet there seems to be precious little evidence in regards to why gamers - from casual, iPhone tappers to hardcore, keyboard mashers - sink thousands each year on virtual experiences.

I try to think about the console games I play most - mainly FIFA, Madden, Battlefield and every now and then, perhaps a solid session of Gran Turismo. Does that make me a competitive, narcissistic brat? Does it mean I’m a socialite? Or just that I hate story modes?

Theory one - I’m a competitive, narcissistic brat. Certainly growing up I loved competing, I wanted to be the best; I was absorbed in being a professional athlete, in any capacity. As I grew older, my competitive urges waned, and while I still enjoy winning far more than losing, it is no longer the be all, end all in my life. I don’t think my gaming habits are a throwback to a former me, so I’m inclined to cross this theory off the list.

Theory two - I’m a socialite. As with most young men, I love to catch up with mates, have a few drinks, maybe dance (eye-gougingly poorly) to some white noise that my eardrums will berate me for in thirty years. However, less and less am I finding myself playing online. Sure, I’ll play game after game of FIFA against friends, but I do the same thing against the computer opponents. I don’t mind playing on my own, just as I don’t mind being in my own company. So again, I don’t think my gaming behaviours mirror my personality in this sense.

Theory three - I just hate story modes. Anyone looking at the games I play most would assume that this is the case - that I just don’t appreciate higher levels of artistic direction in many games. And while it’s true that I haven’t played Heavy Rain, I was totally absorbed by GTA IV and, despite having never played one before, Metal Gear Solid 4; so much so that I watched all of the cutscenes outside the actual game! While I enjoy story-driven games, I have found that rarely do I have two or three hour blocks I can totally devote to gaming, and hence struggle to become captivated in their world. Again, though, it has little to do with my appreciation for art or a well-told narrative.

Here at MMGN, we have thousands upon thousands of members. Our newly created Facebook page alone has over 11,000 likes. Yet in my opinion, for all the statistics and numbers and fiddly surveys and polls, there is simply no unifying theory for why we all game. It’s a little of this, a little of that, for each individual person. Maybe that’s why we love it.

We know my Nintendo was a better parent than my real parents. :P
I started gaming as a kid because of the weather! Living in Adelaide is tough during most winter months and it was hard to go outside when it was constantly raining.

My parents decided instead of taking me out into the shopping centres, to see friends or just out of the house to turn me into the anti social lil miss I am today :D

Ever since those days I have been hooked and love nothing more than settling in with a good game, some good gaming company and a pizza or two. I frequently have game nights at my place as a way to relax, to be entertained and just to spend time participating in hobby I have loved for so long.
It lets me escape from reality. Sometimes, well always, I wish I could live inside the world of games, but no, I'm stuck in this world :P =_=

Living in Adelaide eh, that's a pretty good reason. Hey, I'm here too! :P
It was my destiny. I am fated to do great things for the gaming world.

Is it really that simple for you? It's exclusively just to get away from the real world? I can't picture myself gaming only for that reason =_= good for you though :)

You sure were, doc.
It depends; when playing most multiplayer games, I play to get better. I revel in watching my skills grow and advance beyond others', be it in SSBB, Crossfire, Mario Kart, etc. But some games, like Halo or FIFA, I just play for the hell of it. While the overall goal is winning, I just have fun playing the intricacies of the sport (this extends to real life when I play real sports such as soccer).

Then there's single-player games. There's three reasons (I can think of right now) that I play those. The first is the achievement; playing DKCR and getting all the Banana coins/Puzzle Pieces/Temples is just something I felt like I have to do as a gamer. The same extends to Mario and whatnot.

The second reason is the story; when playing games or movies that have stories that relate to me somehow, I just can't stop thinking about them. I feel a need to flesh out every single part of the story, be it through gameplay or rewatching the movie. It depends how the game relates to me; there's the characters, which I feel do exactly what I would do in their situation (Megamind? I'd play fitting background music everyday god damnit [monkey]), and then there's the story. A great story (TWEWY, The Witcher 2) just captivates me. It's the same feeling as reading a great book from RA Salvatore or JK Rowling; I want to read more, to flesh out the story, and to learn how it all works out.

And the third is to have fun; there are games like Just Dance or Mario Party that I play just to have fun with family and friends. There's no deep or intricate reasons to play these; just have fun.
it's like an interactive movie
I play games cause in real life you can't level up, get new equipment that is good enough to wear, kill monsters, go into people's houses and take things for free, get a discount at inns, play as someone else and cheat when things are stupid and are in the way.

Also life is pretty boring to begin with.

What else is there to do after school until dinner!

Yes that's what I've been tryna say :)

haha true! =D
I think it's great stimulation, helps problem solving, gets you thinking, although it might compromise creativity if it's already done all of that for you (expect for Minecraft which does all of the above perfectly).

I play it to pass the time, IF I've gotten work and fitness out of the way first. I think they're more important.

Playing video games > Work and fitness :P
Because reality sucks. I'd much rather leap through the Mushroom Kingdom, explore Hyrule, blast through Haven City, relax in Traverse Town and journey over the Bionis.

There are people that literally, seriously try to define "fun".

I'll simply call them the "hipster video gamer media".

And I am dead serious. I've been caught right in the middle of a debate about whether or not games need to be "fun", which turned into what "fun" means.

I rolled my eyes and went home to play COD.

I hate hipsters.

I reckon you would be in a minority there, I think one reason people game is a form of procrastination. I don't expect people to like hearing it but I've done it plenty in the past ;)

Playing a PC or video game is like a dream...a second life.

Hear hear. That's my approach to gaming from this year on. Gaming might feel good in the short run but in the long run being successful and healthy is a far better pursuit.

Thank you :)
I game cause it keeps you guys in a job. [MOG]

We thank you so much for your contribution *_*
i think of it as an "interactive movie" (for story based games). for example imagine being able to "control" jason bourne's actions and getting from point A to point B based on YOUR actions. in the movie, u watch him do it. in a game, you would control how u got to point B and how u eliminated the enemies, etc. its hard to explain without sounding weird, but i hope u get my drift lol.

all games are similar to an extent. e.g. sports games, instead of watching the players on tv, you get to control the outcome etc.

Fun is over-rated and a buzzword.
No game can be 'fun'.
Gamers hate video games.

;)
Hipster!

Controlling the outcome is a good reason to play games but surely it isn't your only reason, Captain? :)

It's hard to say that when games are part of your job [Shifty]

But seriously, I find that's more of the ideal scenario. Whenever I had an assignment due or an exam coming up I always wanted to play games I hadn't played for months and often used them give me a break. Like write another paragraph, then play a match in Fifa to give some motivation. But if I didn't have the essay to write, I probably wouldn't have wanted to play Fifa.
It's just the same as watching a movie, I just like to control the movie and have fun with it.
